Because we’ve had enough of 80-year-old crisp bags in the woods.
Now, what would be the point in our sustainable snack packaging, if we didn't make composting it as easy as snacking?
Below are our top home-composting tips, as well as why it's so important!
The Problem with Crisp Bags
In the UK alone, we munch our way through over 6 Billion bags of crisps every year! The majority of those can't even be recycled and end up in landfills, our oceans, or in the very nature that we humans have already put in so much jeopardy. These include our woodlands, parks and waterways.
Standard crisp bags are made from metallised plastic film. (You know the shiny stuff?) They take 80 years, at the very least, to decompose. And that’s if they break down at all! Most crisp packets can and will outlive the average human, and we live for a pretty long time!
Did You Know? Crisp bags found on UK beaches and woodland clean-ups still have visible branding from the ‘80s and ‘90s. (That’s four to five decades ago!)
The Discovery of a Snack Graveyard
Chris, our co-founder, recently found dozens of old crisp bags buried in the undergrowth during a woodland cleanup that he was participating in. The worst part? They were all majorly intact. See for yourself!
When we say they last forever, we’re not exaggerating!
This is the reality behind crisps as an everyday snack: unsustainable and polluting, and it’s exactly why Spudos was born.
So… Our Solution?
Compostable, plastic-free crisp packaging that actually breaks down, no industrial bins, and you don't even need to leave the house.
Now we don’t know about you, but as crisp lovers and nature lovers, we can’t properly enjoy a packet of crisps when it’s going to do this much damage.
We love crisps, but we definitely love our planet more.
At Spudos, we wanted to create a snack that tastes good and feels good. That’s why every Spudos crisp bag, seasoning sachet and shake bag is made from certified 100% home-compostable materials.
That Means:
- No plastic. No tricks. (No greenwashing here!)
- They break down in a standard home compost bin – no need for pesky, inconvenient supermarket recycling!
- Returns to the earth in as little as 3 months, depending on conditions.
Spudos bags are designed to disappear, unlike traditional crisp packaging.

The Zero-Fuss Guide: How To Compost Your Spudos Bag at Home
With the right guide, home composting is as simple as seasoning your Spudos! Takes seconds, and makes a BIG difference. Luckily, you’re in the right place!
Here’s how to compost our crisp bags at home in 5 easy steps:
What You’ll Need:
- A home compost bin or pile (indoor or outdoor)
- Some ‘brown materials’ (cardboard, paper, dried leaves)
- Your empty Spudos bags, seasoning sachets and shake bags
Step-by-Step:
- Eat and Enjoy your Spudos. (Obviously)
- Tear the bag and sachets into smaller pieces (this helps it break down faster!)
- Toss it into your compost bin with your other food scraps (the more, the merrier!)
- Mix it every few weeks (for oxygen and balance)
- Let nature do its thing!
Top Tips:
- Pair with kitchen peelings and garden waste for the best results!
- No compost bin? No problem! It’s not a necessity. A compost pile does just as well, and it goes directly back to the ground!
- If you do prefer a bin, your local community garden or council definitely has one nearby. Just search “communal compost bin near me”.
Still Wondering Why You Should Switch to Spudos?
Because we believe your snacks shouldn’t outlive you. Traditional crisp bags stick around for generations; Spudos bags don’t stick around at all.

FAQs
Can I compost the Spudos bag in my food waste bin?
Most UK councils accept home-compostable packaging in food waste bins. But it's always worth it to double-check your local authority guidelines.
What makes Spudos packaging different from ‘biodegradable’ packaging?
Whilst they both ‘break down’ and return to the earth, our TÜV OK compost Home scheme, AS5810 and BNQ certified home-compostable crisp bags means that it breaks down completely, creating nutrient-rich soil that is completely free from microplastics (because there is no plastic!).
Does composting really make a difference?
100%. Composting reduces waste, cuts methane emissions from landfill, and returns nutrients to the soil. With Spudos, even your snack habit becomes part of the solution!
Can I recycle the bag instead of composting it?
Our packaging is designed specifically for composting. It’s not suitable for plastic recycling bins. But that’s kind of the point – No plastic here!
Do I need to wash the bag before composting?
Not at all. Just empty the crumbs (bonus points if you eat them!) and toss your bag to compost. No rinsing or cleaning needed.
Why don’t more crisp companies use home compostable packaging?
Short answer; because it's expensive. Our crisp bags literally cost 10 times more than if we were to make them out of plastic. We chose to do it anyway, because someone has to start the revolution and our planet is worth it!
